Why is it considered reasonable for a private train company with a monopoly to fleece its customers in order to fund investment to its infrastructure?

Andrew Round, BirminghamIt’s wrong to put monopolies in private hands. Trains in Birmingham are expensive and almost always late.
Christopher Smith, CoventryHS2 plus high ticket costs prohibit train travel by a large, poorer section of our society and therefore inhibits jobs and prosperity.
Hayley Wingrove, WickfordPrivatisation does not work. We are still propping up private companies as they make a profit off the back of fed up commuters.
