I do not understand why we have to pay for our rail travel and also for the profits and shareholders gains – and some overly-paid, incompetent CEOs.
Fundamentally, public transport should be an enabling, democratising force for the people, not a competitive business venture run for the shareholders.
The model set by East Coast line looks good to me.
With fewer staffed ticket offices the travelling public will get worse customer service and no help getting the best deals from an ever confusing array of tickets.
Train travel has become a ridiculously expensive, uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. It wasn’t always so. I support the return of British Rail.

Privatizing has buggered up the electricity industry, the gas industry, the water industry and the waste disposal industry too. Some things should be considered a service and run to provide just that at an economic cost not a way of milking the end users.
I sympathise with their sentiments and agree for the most part. However I have seen far better written reports than this. I note with interest the total lack of integration across the public transport network, it is of course a universal truth, a result not just of operator competition, but of competing modes. The great shame in all of this is that once upon a time, all of the large and many of the smaller urban areas had their own bus or occasionally tram networks provided by the local authorities. They offered usually a high quality service tailored to local needs, Manchester (mentioned in the report) being a classic case.
The buses and trains need to be put back in public hands we at the moment subsidies them ever since the Tories sold them of so how can you tell me that they are private companys

......I was up in Edinburgh a couple of months ago. That parts of Britain's railways are publicity run, I noticed that this organisation keeps things moving more.
