If critics of this policy realised how much of our money was going in subsidies to the private railway companies (owned in large part by other countries' nationalised railways) they might perhaps see the wisdom of it. But no - they've been conditioned to frown on anything that might actually benefit them. (It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt...)

the Tories will do all they can to keep them private, election will be dragged out until end of the year by which time some would have been offered extensions. If BR had the level of investment from the Government / Taxpayer which these private companies have had who knows where it would be now

So if we follow the Transport for Wales model in Wales getting 140m subsidy from the Welsh government (taxpayers money) that’s Welsh Labour ! How much will the rest of Britain cost ? And I used the trains when BR was in charge in the 80’s You are looking at it with rose tinted glasses Service was appalling rarely on time & the sandwiches 🥪 were even worse!!
Much as I'm not sure they'll follow through with this...it needs to be done. In addition, all utilities should be run by the State for the benefit of the People.

The current government will put at least a 5 year extension on all of those contracts before they get voted out of office as a parting gift to the train operators knowing full well that any future government would have to compensate these companies if they wanted to take them back in house sooner before the contract ends. Can see that coming now labour have made it clear their intentions.
Be good to see them go back to public ownership - now we need the Labour party to commit, without ifs or buts or caveats about recovering the costs so far, to reducing the prices by the "average" percentage of 41%. This covers the money wasted feeding the bloated shareholders and that dividend amount is the creator of inflated unjustifiable ticket prices.
More vote grabbing promises from Starmer. Be interesting to see if anything happens in the first 5 years, let alone at all.

It's a no brainer really, pay money back to the Exchequer or pay dividends to shareholders. I know which I'd rather see!
Renationalised is a term for it. Democratised is a term I prefer. That is the railways are run by the Govt with a Minister accountable Parliament and voters able to deliver a verdict if they so choose at elections
And so does Labour. Are we happy yet?
